Everywhere Else

A collective mapping of publicness, made with young people in Leigh, UK.
Who decides how a place is lived in? Access to public space is diminishing, but more than that, the collective sense of ‘publicness’ — of a place being everyone’s to use, make and reimagine — is on the decline.
Platforms such as Google Maps present a place where shops, restaurants and paid attractions take centre stage. This is the version of the city favoured by financially-minded developers, a place where — ultimately — you go to part with money.
But what if you don’t have money, or want to know other versions of your hometown? Everywhere Else is an open platform for people in Leigh to map everything that platforms such as Google Maps neglect: a map of the ‘gaps’ in Google’s way of seeing the world.
